Allegory with Venus and Cupid~ Without even reading about this painting I was imediately drwn to it. It reminded me of Shakespear's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with all of the vividly exciting characters and very adventurous story to go along. The only character that I recognized right off the bat was cupid, but I was curious about his femine features especially in the face. After reading about the painting I was totally blown away. One by one the characters came into place like Father Time with the hour glass gently painted behind him, Playfullness or Jest about to throw pink rose petals on the Cupid and Vunus, and all of the others with the little tid-bits that the book pointed out. The only character I really didn't understand was Truth. I didn't really get how she was interpreted because there was nothing really specific that lead me to her name other than the fact that she assisted Father Time in exposing the "truth". After all of the characters came into place and the explanation of what was happening was told it occurred me to that it was just like a sixteenth century soap opera. Characters are playing tricks, others are finding the evil truth that is going on behind blue curtains, Pain or Jealousy are seeing everything that's going on and can't handle it, the whole thing is just one Huge soap opera and I love it!!

  1. devon- i love hearing the passion in your words when you talk about something you love- like the Shakespeare and the incredibly complex figures he weaves...this is what I want to see more of. Don;t forget images-

  2. I was drawn to this piece as well. I like your comparison to a soap opera. It's a modern way of describing the juxtaposition of characters young and old, peaceful and tormented, all with apparent ulterior motives.
